But if you want to jump straight to the results, here are my top 10 picks. You can click on a course to jump to the corresponding section:

What is Interior Design?

Interior design is all about how we experience spaces. It’s an essential part of our daily lives and affects all our actions from living, working to even healing. It’s not just about being aesthetic, it’s about being functional and comfortable as well.

According to IIDA:

Interior design is defined as the professional and comprehensive practice of creating an interior environment that addresses, protects, and responds to human need(s). It is the art, science, and business planning of a creative, technical, sustainable, and functional interior solution that corresponds to the architecture of a space, while incorporating process and strategy, a mandate for well-being, safety, and health, with informed decisions about style and aesthetics.

Interior Design Schools adds:

Interior design involves the organization and coordination of all aspects of the interior of a space, from paints and finishes to cabinetry, lighting, ventilation and windows, plumbing and fixtures, and creation and placement of non-load-bearing walls.

Why are Interior Design Skills Important?

The New York School of Interior Design shows that from 2020-2021, 90% of the BFA graduates were employed and 10% were pursuing higher education, while 96% of the MFA graduates were employed and 4% were still seeking employment.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for interior designers was $60,340 in May 2021, with about 8,200 openings for interior designers projected each year, on average, over the decade. More information on the occupational employment and wages of interior designers in the U.S. as of May 2021 can be found here.

What is My Experience with Interior Design?

I am a design enthusiast and an art lover in general. I like to have an eye for good design and try to apply it in my life. I have actively participated in choosing the colors of the walls of our new homes, as well as choosing which new furniture and decorations would go with the house.

I also give importance to incorporating old furniture into the new style to save costs and retain memories. Interestingly, being a civil engineer also helps me with interior design because a part of it includes engineering and architectural aspects as well. As always, I like to fuse my knowledge with my passion.

Besides that, I am a Guided Project Instructor and a Beta Tester at Coursera, having tested many courses before they’re officially launched. I have taken over 50 online courses in various subjects.

My experience as an online learner and teacher has given me some perspective on what to look for in an online course. I used my experience to evaluate each course in this list.

Course Ranking Methodology

I built this ranking following the now tried-and-tested methodology I used in previous rankings (you can find them all here). It involves a three-step process:

  1. Research: I started by leveraging Class Central’s database with 100K online courses and 200K+ reviews. Then, I made a preliminary selection of 90+ Interior Design courses by rating, reviews, and bookmarks.
  2. Evaluate: I read through reviews on Class Central, Reddit, and course providers to understand what other learners thought about each course and combined it with my own experience as a learner.
  3. Select: Well-made courses were picked if they presented valuable and engaging content and they have to fit in a set of criteria and be ranked accordingly: comprehensive curriculum, release date, affordability, ratings and enrollments.

The end result is a unique selection of courses that combines a decade of Class Central data and my own experience as an online learner to try to get the best of both worlds. So far, I’ve spent more than 9 hours building this list, and I’ll continue to update it.
